Dear Marshall Lane Families,

Happy New Year from the entire Marshall Lane staff!  We hope that you and your family had a fun and restful holiday season.

At this point, we are nearly halfway through the school year.  Our students still have a lot to learn during this period of time.  The best way for students to remain current with their class is for them to be in school every day that they are not ill.

Now that the holidays are over, we are hoping that families will limit their travel to the upcoming break times rather than taking trips during regularly scheduled school days. Days off are as follows:

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 15th

Winter Break—February 19th to 23rd

Spring Break—April 9th to 13th

Memorial Day on Monday, May 28th

Please try to schedule any family trips or days out of town during the above times.  Thank you!

Sincerely,

Priscilla Spencer, principal

Safety of our children, both physical and emotional, is the highest priority at Marshall Lane. Arrival and dismissal times can be stressful as families and students rush or linger at school. It is vital that we model the patience and respect we want our children to take into their future.

Please allow yourself time to find parking or plan to walk to school if you are not arriving early enough to complete drop off or pick up in a timely manner. Please be respectful of marked parking stalls and any traffic cones. The middle row of parking places are reserved for staff members.  Please avoid parking in these out of respect for our hard working employees.

Remember that the outside lane is for dropping students off or picking them up.  Please wait patiently for your turn and do not pull in front of the line of cars that are waiting or into the bus area.  Students need to be dropped off and picked up from the passenger side of your vehicle.

Also, please be thoughtful of our neighbors and do not park in front of driveways, obey the parking signs, and be courteous of pedestrian and automobile traffic. We need YOU to help us keep our students and families safe.  Thank you!

Dear Marshall Lane Families,

During this time of year, we all reflect on the things in our life for which we are grateful.  I want to thank each and every one of you for your support of Marshall Lane and our students.  It is a fabulous place to be.  We appreciate you sharing your children with us.  Thank you for everything that you do to make our school the wonderful place that it is.

Enjoy time with your family and friends.  Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Sincerely,

Priscilla Spencer, principal

This month’s ABC book: “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andreae tells the story of Gerald the giraffe who is able to dance to his own tune when he gets some encouraging words from an unlikely friend.

Goals of the lesson:

  • Students learn about personal power and practice using their positive personal power to benefit both themselves and others.
  • Students learn that making other people feel good is a great way to fill their own buckets, too!

To reinforce this lesson at home:

  • Create opportunities to encourage your child to try new things.
  • Offer praise for their willingness to try and practice.
  • Whenever they’re in a negative situation, help your child “switch the channel” to reframe their inner dialogue to create an “I can do it!” attitude.
  • Remind your child: Don’t focus on the black dot. Focus on the white page.
  • Involve children of all ages in family decision making.

Quick Tip: Teach your child practical skills such as how to change a tire, cook a couple of meals, or sew on a button. Well-prepared young people are more likely to feel a sense of personal power.

When you “catch” kids modeling positive behaviors...Notice, Name it, and Celebrate it!

At Marshall Lane, one goal that we have for our students is that they will become lifelong learners.  One of the best ways to encourage our students to demonstrate a growth mindset is to have an ongoing focus on learning something new every day ourselves.

Over 60 parents attended Literacy Night this year to learn how to help their students at home to become better learners. A huge thanks to Sharon Hirsch and Jodie Topping who conducted a very helpful informational workshop and organized babysitting so parents could attend.  The feedback was outstanding.

Parent University for our district was held at Monroe Middle School on October 15th.  Several of our families attended and benefitted from hearing a keynote address by our Superintendent Dr. Shelly Viramontez and our CUSD Board Members.  Parents were also able to attend three 45 minute workshops on topics of interest to them. Thanks to Nedda Ashjaee, Jodie Topping, and Chrissie Ulrey for being members of a parent panel that helped attendees by answering their questions during two of the sessions.

Several recent events have been held to provide fun events for our community at Marshall Lane.  Without the support of our amazing PTA and our wonderful volunteers, these events would not have been possible.

Bingo Night was once again a popular event.  This year, it was organized by Jodie Topping, and Allison Conta.  Jim Gannon and Jon Conta were our fantastic bingo callers for the evening and Brent Topping provided technical support.  Thanks to them and all of the families who attended.

Our Pumpkin Walk is a fantastic yearly event that requires the work of lots of people.  Once again, Stacey Siebold headed up this event and did an incredible job!  A special thanks to her for all of her hard work to make this event run smoothly. We are also grateful to the many people who supported the effort to set up, run and clean up this event, especially Shelly and Steven Alleston, Peter Bowyer, Dave Mackin, Lauren Froman, Michelle Gannon, Cody Gordon, Brad Hunt, Ben Nygaard, John Ross, Dave Snider, Dana Theriault, and many other volunteers.  Thank you for all of your efforts on behalf of our students.

Students at Marshall Lane work hard in all academic areas.  One of the subjects that is sometimes difficult for students is writing.  Every year, Campbell Union School District holds a Young Authors’ Fair.  Teachers submit a variety of writing samples and one is chosen to be the Young Author of the Year.

We are very proud to announce that Marshall Lane’s Young Author this year is 5th grader Noah Hirsch.  When he was in 4th grade last year, Noah wrote a book entitled The Other Side.

Join us to celebrate Noah and all of the district Young Authors of the Year at Barnes and Noble on Stevens Creek next Wednesday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m.  The authors will be speaking and signing copies of their literary works.  Hope to see you there!

Every day at Marshall Lane, approximately 600 children arrive within a short period of time.  Safety is our main concern, so there are procedures in place to make sure that risks to our students and their families are minimized.  Please read the following guidelines that were sent to you in the summer mailer:

  • Parking spaces in the center of the lower parking lot are reserved for our staff members.  Due to the construction, these are not marked at this time.  However, out of respect for our hard working teachers and staff members, please do not park in the middle spaces.  We greatly appreciate it!
  • Students in Preschool, TK and K need to be escorted to their classrooms by a responsible adult.  Please monitor your child/ren’s behavior while they are waiting.
  • Students in first to fifth grades may be dropped off by driving through the drop off area adjacent to the ramp in front of the school or in the upper parking lot.  Please do not drop students off in the middle of the parking lot or in the drive through lane for their safety.  The drive through lane is the one that is not adjacent to the curb area.  Students should get out of their car on the school side so they are not emerging into traffic.
