This week was Computer Science Education Week all over the world. Every student at Marshall Lane participated in the “Hour of Code” which is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. It is designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics of computer science.

Due to the generosity of our school district, Marshall Lane received 6 Bluebot robots and 8 Dash robots last week.  At our staff meeting, teachers learned how to use the robots.  These are not toys, but rather tools to teach students how to code.

Over the past three days, we have had two district coaches, our own site coach, Michelle Beddo and one of our teachers, Meghan Snelham, who works with our teachers on technology integration, visit many of our classrooms to teach students how to use the robots. The children and their teachers were so excited to learn to code the robots to follow commands.  Ask your child about this experience. Our teachers will continue to use these fantastic learning tools throughout the school year.

Whatever careers our students pursue, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding technology. However, only a small percentage of us are studying computer science. Fewer students are studying it than a decade ago.  We want to help provide our students with the skills and abilities to help them have college and career success.  For more information visit: http://hourofcode.com/us

The holidays have almost arrived and our two-week break is coming up.  Whatever you celebrate, we hope that you and your family will have time to rest and relax as you enjoy the holidays.

As always, thank you for your help and continuing support!  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Campbell Union School District will begin registration for the 2016-2017 school year on January 19, 2016 for children entering Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten.  Registered students are assigned to the school that serves the child’s home address. Parents may request a different school during the Open Enrollment period.*

 ● Kindergarten Open Enrollment: January 19th to February 12th, 2016.

● Entering Middle School Open Enrollment: February 12th, 2016

Middle school starts with 5th grade in our district. Parents of this year’s 4th graders need to participate in Open Enrollment* to indicate their preference for elementary or middle school placement. Students now in 5th grade will be assigned to their resident middle school.  However, parents may choose to request a specific school during Open Enrollment. To help you to determine which school your child will attend, please plan to attend one or more of the tours listed below.

* Open Enrollment is an option only for CUSD residents whose students are entering kindergarten or middle school in 2016-2017.

In order to ensure student safety, our expectation is that students will arrive between 8:00 and 8:20 in the morning.  When they come to school, they are to wait in the breezeway adjacent to the office.  At 8:10, they are dismissed to their classrooms.  At this point, students must line up outside their classrooms.  At 8:17, teachers will open their doors to let students in so instruction can begin at 8:20.  Playing before school is not allowed since there is no supervision on the playgrounds.

At the end of the day when students are dismissed there are two places where they may wait to be picked up.  One is in the lower parking lot and the other is in the upper parking lot.  Staff members are present there to supervise students until they are picked up.  Students should not be directed to wait by the Sobey Road gate since there is no supervision there and cars cannot stop in that area to pick up students.

Please do not tell your children that they can stay and play after school is over, unless there is another parent who is responsible for supervising them.  Thank you!

On Tuesday, December 1st, fifty volunteers from Assistance League of Los Gatos-Saratoga distributed 1,296 dictionaries to 43 classrooms in 9 schools as part of Campbell Union School District's College and Career Curriculum Strand.  They visited the third grade classrooms of Mrs. Brittany Gardner,  Mrs. Bindi Gill, Ms. Sarah Wright, and Ms. Meghan Snelham. Students get to keep the dictionaries for their personal use at home or at school. Our Marshall Lane students were thrilled to receive this special gift.

As part of the presentation, each volunteer taught a short lesson on dictionary use through the use of word games and suggestions about ways to use this resource. Typically, presenters wear their college sweatshirts or career uniforms and discuss how literacy will affect the students' lives and future education.  This aligns nicely with our message on College Day of the benefits of higher education.
The Assistance League of Los Gatos-Saratoga has been part of this annual tradition providing dictionaries for every third grader in the Campbell Union School District for the past nine years. We are very grateful for their time and generous gift of dictionaries.

Walking is a fun and healthy way to spend time with your child.

In Campbell Union School District, we encourage parents and students to walk or bike to school every Wednesday. For those who live too far, try parking farther away from the school and walking the last block or two.

Since children learn by doing, YOU are your child’s most important role model for learning to walk safely. As you walk, please:

  • Obey all traffic signs and signals.
  • Look LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT for moving cars, and cross when clear.
  • Time yourself. Practice this weekend to find out how much time to allow.
  • Check the weather and dress appropriately (boots, rain coat, umbrella, etc.).

As you walk, you can talk with your child about what you’re doing and explain why.

Each year, we partner with the Sheriff’s Department to practice a lockdown drill.  This is an important exercise in order to keep the children safe in case of a real emergency on campus or in the neighborhood that might require us to shelter in place or lockdown the campus. The drill will begin around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 19th and will be done before lunch time.  If you are on campus during that time, you will be required to participate.

Dear Marshall Lane Parents,

At this time of year, our thoughts turn to the holidays ahead. Unbelievably, Thanksgiving is almost here.  This holiday provides us with an opportunity to reflect on all of the good things in our life for which we are grateful.  Of course, family and friends top the list for all of us. In addition, I am very thankful for Marshall Lane.  The children, staff members, families, and community are very special.  I am honored to be a part of this wonderful school!  Know that I count all of you among my many blessings!

 Warm regards,

Priscilla

In conjunction with Starting Arts, our play this year is a production of Seussical Jr. It is a very cute musical based on the popular Dr. Seuss books. This entertaining musical will be performed in our cafeteria on Thursday and Friday, December 3rd and 4th at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, December 5th at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.   Sixty-five of our talented students are participating in this show.  They have worked very hard on the challenging music in the show and look forward to performing the opening of the show for our students on Friday, November 20th at 1:15 and 2:00 so students can preview their performance. We hope that you will be able to join us for one of their performances or for one of the assemblies.  Tickets can be purchased from Starting Arts online at MarshallLaneSeussical.eventbrite.com  Hope to see you there!
