Last week, our 5th graders had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Junior Achievement STEAM and College and Career Partnership. Two members of the Junior Achievement staff and two workers from industry spent the morning with our students teaching them about economics and job careers in the science, technology and engineering fields.  Our students really enjoyed the lessons and learned a lot from our visitors.

In the spring, our students will go on a field trip to a local business to learn more about future job possibilities.  Junior Achievement is looking for opportunities to partner with local businesses such as ADP, E-Trade, NetApp, SanDisk, or other companies like these.  If you work at one of these kinds of companies and are able to help us to arrange a field trip, please email our principal, Priscilla Spencer at pspencer [at] campbellusd.org

Thank you!

A Message from the Superintendent

Parents often ask me: “When will I find out the results of my child’s tests?”

Each year our teachers administer several assessments to determine student growth and inform their classroom teaching practice. These assessments—tests, quizzes, class projects, and the like—provide multiple ways to measure student progress towards learning the important concepts they need for success in school and in the community at-large.

Our assessment cycle includes dates we report results throughout the year. Also, our teachers are available to discuss student progress with the parents.

Assessment Reporting Schedule

iReady Testing Results

  • October at Parent-Teacher Conferences
  • Mid-November via student delivery
  • Early March via student delivery

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Distribution Cycle

  • Tentatively August/September 2016 via U.S. mail

Trimester Report Cards

  • Middle School (sent via U.S. mail): Nov. 19, March 10, June 9
  • Elementary School (sent home with student): Nov. 20, March 18, June 8

Campbell Union School District employees value partnering with you to prepare our students for college and career success. Please continue to communicate with your child’s teacher(s) to stay informed and to ensure that we are all doing our best to provide each student with an optimal educational experience.

This month’s ABC book: “Say Something” by Peggy Moss is a powerful story in which the narrator sees and hears teasing, put-downs, pushing, and other forms of bully behaviors at her school. Because she’s confused about what to do, she doesn’t do anything at first. However, her responses change as she gains understanding and empathy.

Many parents have expressed frustration with the new Common Core Math Standards since the strategies that students are being asked to use differ from what they learned in school.  Instead of merely arriving at the correct answer, we want students to be able to analyze and explain their thinking using pictures, numbers and words.  These practices help to ensure that students are building number sense and mathematical understanding.  We are offering some parent Math Nights to assist parents in understanding this new approach.  They are as follows:

For families of elementary age students:

  • Thursday, November 5th at 8:30 a.m. at Rosemary School
  • Monday, November 16th at 5:30 p.m. at Forest Hill School

For families of middle school students:

  • Tuesday, November 17th at 5:30 p.m. at Campbell Middle School.

We hope you can join us for one of these informational meetings.

Our Pumpkin Walk on October 24th was an amazing event.  Although we changed the location, the same community spirit abounded.  Students and their families enjoyed the many activities that were provided.  A special thanks to the PTA, Stacey Siebold, Jodie Topping, Karen Coburn, Heather Boger, Cynthia Dodd, Mark and Esther Mantelli, Stacey Szenda, Shannon Cloud, John Ross, Brad Hunt, Valerie Alston, Janine Matheson and all of the other teachers and many other volunteers who made this event so special.

Calling all parents of English Language Learners! At the Principal Chat on November 6th at 8:30 a.m. our English Language Development teacher, Mrs. Pat Tappan, will talk about the English Language Learner program at our school and answer any questions that you might have.  Please join us!

The District’s Governing Board and Superintendent will present the State of the District report on Mon., Nov. 9, 2015, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Campbell Community Center, Orchard City Banquet Hall, 1 W. Campbell Ave., Campbell. Topics will include the status of the district’s strategic goals, Local Control and Accountability Plans, district funding, and implementing the new State Standards.  Our principal, several teachers, and some parents will attend.  We hope that you will join us for one of the most important district meetings of the year.

As always, thank you for your help and continuing support!  Marshall Lane is a great place to be.

Regards,

Priscilla Spencer, Principal

Our next PTA meeting will have a special guest speaker.  School Resource Office Deputy Chad Garton will be addressing the parents on the topic of traffic safety.  We have received some complaints regarding driving on the streets around our campus as well as in our parking lot.  While we do our best to try to keep your children safe, we need YOU to help us.  Exercising caution, driving slowly, and following the drop off and pick up procedures in both parking lots is essential.

Officer Garton is a Sheriff who is assigned to assist our school with any issues.  He has presented to our students on the topics of stranger danger and bicycle safety.  Officer Garton will be conducting an assembly soon about Internet Safety for our 3rd to 5th graders.  We hope that you will attend this meeting to hear his presentation and ask him any questions that you may have.

As Halloween approaches, students begin to get excited about the holiday. At Marshall Lane, one of our most popular events is a family celebration of Halloween called The Pumpkin Walk that takes place this year on Saturday, October 24th from 1:00 to 5:00. This tradition began 44 years ago with a small event that consisted only of a pumpkin walk activity with nothing else. It has grown into a huge family carnival with a costume parade, games for the kids to play, a haunted house, food booths, a bake sale, a cake decorating contest, a petting zoo, a bounce house, inflatable slide, a climbing wall, and racecars, among other things.

We hope that you and your family and friends will join us on Saturday to enjoy this wonderful event and to socialize with other members of the community.

Help is still needed to ensure that all booths and activities will remain open during the entire event and to help set up before and clean up after. If you have not yet signed up and can assist, please log on to Konstella or sign up one the board in the breezeway.

Hope to see you there!
Priscilla Spencer, Principal
