School News

One of our most popular fundraisers and community events is our annual Pumpkin Walk. This is the 45th anniversary of this event that is lots of fun for the entire family. Games, food, a petting zoo, a climbing wall, haunted house, costume parade and cake decorating contest are just a few of the activities that are part of this popular event.
The Pumpkin Walk begins promptly at 1:00 with a costume parade. The event goes until 5:00 with lots of activities available to do throughout the afternoon. We hope that you will join us along with your family and friends for a great time.
Please refer to the flyers in your Thursday envelope and Marshall Lane PTA website at www.marshalllanepta.org for information about purchasing tickets and signing up to help at the event. Hope to see you there!!
At the September 20 Strategic Planning Special Session, Governing Board members and 30 participants representing the district’s stakeholders—from students and parents, to employees and community agencies— met to discuss progress and next steps toward achieving the District’s strategic goals.
In one activity, the group identified perceived strengths in the district since the last Strategic Planning Session. To see the list, click on the e-flyer link on this page. For more about the District's Strategic Plan, go to campbellusd.org/strategicplan.

A message went out last week from our Superintendent Dr. Eric Andrew to make you aware of an unfortunate trend that is spreading throughout social media outlets and the news called “clowning” or “creepy clowns” which includes dressing up as a clown and frightening or harassing people. We are aware that students at some of our schools are discussing this topic. To date, there have been no reported incidents of this kind in any of our Campbell Union School District locations. Should we be informed of any actual incidents, we will work with our local authorities to ensure the safety of students, staff, and community.
Like you, we remain vigilant about safety, and we are reminding students of the following:
-
Making a social media post that threatens a school and/or any student is considered to be a serious offense.
-
To always walk with others (parents or friends).
-
To not talk to strangers — especially individuals in full costume.
-
To always let a parent or family member know where they are at all times.
It is unfortunate that social media is being used to promote such disruptive behavior. I appreciate our community for being vigilant and for helping our district as we work together to stay informed and mindful of events that may be topics of discussion for our children. Thank you for your continued support of our students and schools

Nationally acclaimed local author Dr. Francisco Jimenez will join the community in celebrating 12 talented student authors at Campbell Union School District’s Rising Young Authors awards, October 5, 2016, at 7 p.m., at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on Stevens Creek Blvd., in San Jose.
Because our plans connect to your plans…
Please join families, community partners and staff members on Monday, October 10, 2016, at 6–7:30 p.m., in the Campbell Community Center, Orchard City Banquet Hall, 1 W. Campbell Ave., Campbell.
The Campbell Union School District Governing Board and Superintendent Eric Andrew will report to the Community on the status of the District’s strategic goals, accountability plans, funding, and the State’s new academic standards.
See the school's e-flyer page for more details.
District Reorganization Update
Administrators for Campbell Middle School provided a status report to the Board in relation to their work at the school since June.
During the summer, they oversaw:
- Facility clean up and minor campus improvements, including tree replacement, outside seating for students, and removal of lockers that were inadequate for campus needs.
- Hiring faculty, creating team-building opportunities for the school employees, re-initiating the Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) system, and establishing the new Instructional Leadership Team (ILT).
- Reviewing and adjusting systems, such as creating a common lunch period, a singly daily bell schedule, and increasing instructional minutes.
- Building the Transformation Team—which will include students, staff, neighbors, administrators and other community stakeholders—to meet and develop a plan for the school’s transition from middle school to a grade TK-8 school.
Strategic Plan Update
Superintendent Eric Andrew reported that work on the five objectives aimed at achieving the district’s Strategic Goals is going well.
He noted that work on the goals has progressed well with many of the objectives met. He added that some of the deadlines needed to be extended to October and November, due to changes in administration staff and union leadership and to allow the Strategic Planning Committee to consider revising the “Schools’ of Choice” goal’s wording.
Slides from the presentation can be seen on request or online at www.campbellusd.org/pastmeetings.

As you know, we have a long-standing partnership with Project Cornerstone. This has been a very positive initiative for our school and our students. Every five years, a survey is administered to 4th and 5th graders to determine the progress they are making with their efforts. Last week, you received a form to fill out if you do not want your child to participate. A copy of the survey is available for parents to view at:
