Positivity Potlucks Foster Community Spirit at Marshall Lane Elementary

Explanation of positivity potlucks

Marshall Lane Elementary is bringing families together in a new and exciting way with our weekly Positivity Potlucks. Every Friday morning, parents gather in the staff lounge for a casual, potluck-style breakfast, providing a unique opportunity to build connections and foster a positive school community.

The event, which takes place each week by grade level, allows parents to meet and chat with each other in a relaxed, informal setting while sharing yummy treats. The goal of the Positivity Potlucks is to promote collaboration and strengthen relationships between families.

As the school year progresses, we look forward to continuing these weekly potlucks and expanding the sense of unity within the school community.

Staying focused in class is tough on an empty stomach. That's why ensuring your child is well-nourished is a top priority at Marshall Lane. Thanks to the Universal Free Meals program, all students receive meals at no cost, helping them stay energized and ready to learn throughout the day.

To help families plan ahead, here is how it works at Marshall Lane.

Monthly Menus

Parents can easily access the school’s monthly meal menus on our school’s home page, making it simple to plan ahead and keep track of what’s being served.

Meal Applications Matter

Filling out a school meals application isn’t just about ensuring your child gets nutritious meals—it also benefits the entire school community. For every student who applies and qualifies for free or reduced-price meals, the school receives over $1,000 in grant funding. These funds are used for crucial resources like student technology, after-school programs, counseling services, and kitchen equipment. Additionally, qualifying families may be eligible for free or discounted internet services and summer camp opportunities

We are pleased to announce two seats have been filled on our School Site Council following our recent election.  Please read their bios below and join me in welcoming Partha Ray and Amilia Fugman!  Our first SSC meeting is scheduled for October 24 at 2:45.  Thank you to all who participated in the election!
Partha Ray:

As the son of a university professor and as faculty at a Stanford program myself, I am very interested in education and development. I'll have kids at Marshall Lane for the next 7 years and would love to contribute to the school and its programs (and see results) over that time. The School Site Council (SSC) appears set up to make meaningful choices about resource allocation and programs for the school, and requires a level of commitment that I can manage. I'd bring 25 years of professional experience from both academia and industry to the council if I joined. Thanks for your consideration.

Amilia Fugman:
My name is Amilia Fugman. My son, Isaac, began TK this year. However, I am not new to the Campbell Union School District. Both of my middle schoolers attended CUSD schools from K through 5. I have been an active volunteer both in and out of the classroom, held several (including President) PTA Board positions, was Volunteer of the Year for Village School in 2021, represented our elementary school on the Superintendent Parent Advisory Council (SPAC) for several years and have subbed in the Campbell school district for five years. All of this is to say that I am engaged and motivated and keen to support the school, teachers and our students to ensure that every child is nurtured and supported. Thank you for considering me.

Parent-teacher conferences are a vital part of a child’s education, especially at the elementary level. These conferences provide an opportunity for parents and guardians to connect with the teacher and discuss the child’s academic progress, strengths and weaknesses, social development, overall performance, and plan ways to support the student's academic success.

Whether these meetings involve student participation or not, data has shown that parent and guardian involvement in a child’s education can lead to better academic outcomes, improved attendance, and higher graduation rates. 

 

A reminder about Covid protocols

Under the most recent changes to the state’s COVID-19 guidelines, students and staff will be able to return to school sooner, as long as their symptoms are improving. That is one of several changes announced by the California Department of Public Health this month. 

In response, Campbell Union School District has made the appropriate updates to the COVID-19 response plan. Following is a summary of the updates.

Effective March 13, 2023:

  • A COVID-19 positive person may end isolation after five days and return on day six if they feel well, have improving symptoms, and are fever-free for 24 hours, with less emphasis on testing negative. They must continue to wear a mask until after Day 10. This change aligns with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations.
  • After ending isolation, individuals may remove their mask sooner than Day 10 with two sequential negative tests one day apart.​
  • Updates to the definition of infectious period.

Effective effective April 3, 2023:

  • Masks will no longer be required in indoor high-risk and health care settings. They are optional.
  • Schools will no longer send exposure notices home when a positive COVID-19 case is reported

Art, Innovation, and Music

For the 2023-24 school year, students will receive additional instruction in Arts, Innovation, and Music (AIM). The link to the program description tells more about the instruction your child will be receiving by credentialed teachers to deepen their exposure to this important curriculum. During this instructional time, grade-level teachers will have the opportunity to collaborate on their instructional practice with a focus on greater student achievement.
