SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – May31, 2015 –  Winning has never been easier for local residents who enroll in Santa Clara County Library District’s (SCCLD) 2016 Summer Reading Challenge.  “Read for the Win,” the theme for this summer’s program offers everyone, but most especially Santa Clara County students, a chance to have fun and boost this year’s academic achievements while participating in free and fascinating summer challenges.

“To Win” can imply many things.  Winning often means setting new records or becoming the best for a fleeting moment in time.  SCCLD’s Campbell Library wants everyone to strive to be a winner by joining its “Read for the Win” Summer Reading Program and earn rewards that last a lifetime.  According to the California Library Association, reading for pleasure is one of the building blocks needed for young people to grow into healthy, productive adults. http://www.cla-net.org/?78 Enhanced vocabulary, increased knowledge and reduction in stress, improved memory, as well as better focus and concentration skills are all benefits of reading. Kids who opt to include reading into their summer activities list also develop stronger analytical thinking skills, improve their writing skills and have an easier transition to the next year’s elevated grade level.

“Studies continue to show that in order to succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing educational opportunities that allow them to learn and practice essential skills.  The Campbell Library offers this and more, especially during the summer months.  I encourage all local students to stop by the library and enroll in the Summer Reading Challenge and not only read a few books but also engage in one or more of the free and engaging activities offered there,” commented Campbell Mayor, Jason Baker and SCCLD Joint Powers Authority member.  Beginning June 1, 2016, all kids, teens and adults are invited to join the 2016 SCCLD Summer Reading Challenge by reading five books between June 1 and July 31, 2016.  Registration for the challenge can be made in person at the participating library or online at www.sccl.org/summer2016 .  Activities, programs and incentives are grouped in three categories:

Prereaders (0-5) & Kids (6-12)

Teens (13-18)

Adults (18+)

The Summer Reading Challenge remains one of SCCLD’s most popular offerings.  Last summer (2015), over 14,385 kids and teens and 2,022 adults joined in the fun.   This year, SCCLD will once again partner with Santa Clara County Parks and the Children’s Discovery Museum.   Participants will have a chance to talk with a Santa Clara County Park Ranger during one of the many scheduled Ranger visits at a SCCLD library and every person who enrolls in the Summer Reading program will receive a FREE pass to the Children’s Discovery Museum.

From free events, reading incentives and special story times to magicians, acrobats, teen tech workshops and author visits, SCCLD’s “Read for the Win,” has enlightening activities scheduled for almost every day of summer.  All teens and adults who enroll in the program receive a free tote bag; children (0-12) receive a book prize.  Books, eBooks, eAudiobooks, Graphic Novels, and Audiobooks all count toward the five book total.

Complete instructions can be found at SCCLD’s Summer Challenge website @ www.sccl.org/summer2016.  Read for the Win Summer Challenge activities are offered at all SCCLD libraries. For a complete SCCLD Summer Challenge listing, go to: http://www.sccl.org/read-for-the-win-events2016

The program is free and open to everyone.

Dear Parents,

Congratulations to the first grade class for attaining the highest percentage of participation in the Marshall Lane Educational Foundation (MLEF) fundraising drive.  They enjoyed a special grade level movie night last Friday.  A big thanks to MLEF co-chairs Mara Wold and Shannon Cloud, and to our fantastic treasurer Eileen Weinstein and PTA President Jodie Topping for their work on the MLEF effort.  The money collected along with other fundraising earnings directly benefits each and every student at Marshall Lane by providing the class size reduction p.e. teacher, our library and computer lab aide, counseling services, partial funding for reading intervention, some technology costs, assemblies, after school GATE classes, as well as funding for PBIS and Project Cornerstone activities.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to MLEF and who supported all of the PTA efforts this year.  If you have not yet participated in the MLEF effort, it is not too late.  A box in the office is still available for donations.  Thank you!!

As the end of the year rapidly approaches, there are many special activities that will be taking place.  Please check the Upcoming Events article for dates and times.

As always, thank you for your help and continuing support.

Warm regards,

Priscilla Spencer, principal

In this month’s ABC book, “Recess Queen”, by Alexis O’Neill Mean Jean the “recess queen” rules the playground with an iron fist. No one dares cross her path for fear of being hit, punched, or kicked. One day, a new girl shows up on the playground and catches Mean Jean completely off guard. Katie Sue is not the least bit intimidated by Mean Jean. Katie Sue actually invites Jean to join in a jump rope game! In no time, Jean and Katie Sue become friends.

This summer, a new Campbell Care building will be constructed at our site.  It will be the same size as the current building and will be located along the fence line on the upper playground.  Since this will reduce the total amount of the playground area, additional blacktop will be installed in front of the current play structure.

In order to be able to complete the project by the first day of school, construction needs to begin immediately. Temporary fencing will be installed later this week and they will begin the demolition of the blacktop in order to pour the concrete pad for the building.  A new retaining wall will be built behind the current Campbell Care building.

In addition to the new building, solar panels will be installed on the roof over rooms 17 to 20 this summer.  This will be an effective way to reduce our use of energy.

You may have noticed that our new sign is finally operational.  I am happy to report that another electronic sign will also be installed this summer in the upper parking lot.

Lastly, due to the generosity of parents who pledged funds at the spring fling for a hydration station, two or three of these will be installed at Marshall Lane this summer.  Here is a photo of what it will look like.
