Thank you very much for your flexibility and understanding during the first few days of school.  Despite some challenges that the construction presented, the opening of school this year went very smoothly.  We appreciate your support, as always!

Our first two all school PTA events—the Welcome Back Coffee and the Family Picnic—were very well attended.  Parents and students were able to ease back into the school year, catch up with old friends, and meet some people who are new to our school.  A special thanks to Lauren Froman and the entire PTA Board for all of their hard work and support of these events.  Our staff looks forward to partnering with you to benefit all of the students at Marshall Lane.

Here are a few reminders for a successful school year:

·     Label all water bottles, lunch boxes, coats, sweatshirts and sweaters with your child’s           name.  Remind them to keep track of their belongings.

·     Send a healthy snack with your child every day.

·     Remind your child about the plan for picking them up every day.

Parking

·     For the safety of the children and their parents, the speed limit in the parking lot is 10 miles per hour.

·     Respect our staff members by not parking in any spots that are labeled.

·     Park only in official parking spaces—never in the red zones or along the fences.

At lunchtime every day, our teachers have a well-deserved break to eat and possibly relax for a few moments.  Supervision of students at that time is taken care of by paid yard duty assistants (also know as noon aides) as well as volunteers.  If you would like to be considered to be a paid noon aide, please stop by the office for more information.  If you are able to volunteer your time, just show up on days that are convenient and we will loan you a vest and put you to work.  Yard duty is from 11:30 to 1:00 every school day.  Thank you!!

Thanks to everyone who is helping with the congestion in our parking lots by riding their bikes to school.  Our bikes racks have been reinstalled.  One is on the far side of the Campbell Care building outside the fence.  The other is near the benches outside the Kindergarten yard.  If your child is riding their bike to school, please provide them with a lock to attach it to one of the bike racks.  Thank you!

We are very excited to announce that two amazing authors will be visiting our school over the next couple of months.  On September 28th, Max Braillier, author of the Last Kids on Earth, will conduct an assembly for our 3rd to 5th grade students.  We are thrilled to announce that Kathryn Otoshi, author of Zero, One, Two, Beautiful Hands, and her new book Draw the Line will be visiting on October 12th for students in TK to 3rd grade.  Flyers will be coming home that will allow you to purchase books from Hicklebee’s which the authors will sign for the students.

Ann Steele, who is our library tech, works with the people at Hicklebee’s Bookstore to bring touring New York Times best selling authors to speak to our students.  We have been fortunate to have many authors visit and speak to our students about their latest books and the writing process in general.  A big thanks to Ann for organizing these visits!  This is a huge benefit for our students.

Welcome back to a new school year!  There have been a lot of positive changes on campus.  We are very excited about our new look!  I think that you will agree that it is wonderful!

Although the construction will not be completely done on Wednesday when school opens, the big areas that are still under construction will be fenced off until they are completed.  Landscaping will not be done but it will be in process soon.  We are all looking forward to seeing the finished project sometime in the future.

Class lists will be posted at school in the office windows and on our school website after 5:00 on Tuesday.  You will need your child’s district identification number to check the lists to determine who their teacher will be.

School begins on Wednesday at 8:20.  The first few days of school are always hectic and the construction will make this even more challenging.  The parking lots may be affected by the construction, so plan to arrive early to obtain parking.  If possible, walking to school, carpooling with another family, or parking in the neighborhood and walking in would really help with the traffic congestion.  Thank you for being flexible!

2017-2018 is going to be a great year!  Our staff looks forward to our partnership with you.

Marshall Lane has undergone a lot of changes since students left in June, and more are happening daily as our construction and cleaning crews push hard to finish everything before students return. We are very excited about all of the positive changes that are taking place at our school site.

I assure you that, on August 23rd, we will welcome your child to a safe school and engaging lessons for students.

When we return, there will be a few fenced-off areas where the crews will be finishing up.  The surge in construction around the Bay Area caused a couple of delays in our timeline, so some of the work will have to continue into the fall.

Marshall Lane School was built in the 1960s and needed updates to its infrastructure—sewer, gas, electrical, water— as well as improved access for people with disabilities. Thanks to voter-approved school bonds, we are able to make these much-needed improvements.

The projects in this phase include:

  • Replacing aging underground utilities, like electrical and plumbing.
  • Re-grading the site to make it wheel chair accessible.
  • Removing the overhead power line on the east side of the site.
  • Creating safe new plaza area in front of the school for students to wait before and after school.
  • Improving the overall appearance and functionality of the site.
  • Adding a covered outdoor eating area, which will be completed in the near future.

To make these improvements, construction crews removed the concrete paving within the central core of the school.  The walkways will be replaced with new materials and re-landscaping of the affected areas

Our team of professional teachers and support staff are ready to welcome your child and begin a new year of exciting lessons on a safe school campus. Once the construction is completed, our campus will be updated, safer and much more functional.  The long-term benefits of this renovation will be worth the short-term inconveniences.

We will have more information about the renovation at our two Back to School Nights in September.  The Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten Back to School Night will take place on Wednesday, September 13th from 6:00 to 7:30.  Back to School Night for first to fifth grades will take place on Wednesday, September 27th from 6:00 to 7:30.  At this time, we will be able to update you on the progress of the construction.  Please plan to attend.  We are looking forward to our partnership with your family.

Do you want to spend more time at your child’s school helping out and be paid for it?  At lunchtime, we have paid noon aides who supervise lunch and lunch recess. This is  a great way for you to interact with your child during the day, meet their friends, and help out our school.  People are needed from 11:30 to 1:00 every day.  You can sign up for one day a week or multiple days based on what works for your schedule.  If you prefer not to be paid, we also really appreciate volunteers!

If you would like to apply for a noon aide position or volunteer to help, please call our office at (405) 364-4259 or email our principal, Mrs. Spencer at pspencer [at] campbellusd.org.  Hope you can join us!!  Thank you!!
