Happy New Year! We hope that you and your family have had a healthy and restful holiday break.

Our district continues to assess the feasibility of having students return to campus for in-person instruction as soon as it is safe. As you know, a plan is in place for us to return using the hybrid model described on the website at  https://www.campbellusd.org/covid19  However, conditions continue to change rapidly.  On December 16th, a COVID Safety at School presentation was shared at a parent meeting to describe the precautions that have been implemented in preparation for reopening. It can be found at:

Our Campbell Union School District Board will be discussing the reopening plans at their next meeting on Thursday, January 14th at 6:30 p.m. If you want to join the meeting, the link can be found 72 hours before the meeting at https://www.campbellusd.org/board#meetings  Updates from our Superintendent Shelly Viramontez can be found on the district website, as well.

Our entire staff wishes all of us a better year! Be well and stay safe!

As we begin to prepare for students to return to school, it is important for them to practice the safety precautions that will be in place when children are back on campus. Please have them practice wearing a cloth face covering at home for extended periods of time. Once they are back at school, masks will need to be worn by students at all times, except when eating or drinking water.

We will expect students to be able to practice safe physical distancing while walking around campus, at recess time, and in the classrooms. Please have children practice remaining at least 6 feet apart from others. One easy way to practice is to have two people both extend their arms. Fingertips should not touch while doing this.  This will help students to be able to identify just how far apart 6 feet actually is.

Practicing the skills that they need will be helpful for all of us when students return. Also, please purchase extra child-sized masks for your children. We will require them to bring two extra masks in a labeled baggie to leave at school in case their mask is forgotten or becomes dirty or wet. One source for good quality, inexpensive child-sized masks is Old Navy at https://oldnavy.gap.com/

Students will also need to bring a water bottle to school every day since the drinking fountains will be turned off. Thank you for your help in preparing your children for a successful return to school!

Over the first two weeks of school, our teachers have been focusing on making connections with students and forming classroom communities. They have been implementing a new social-emotional curriculum called Character Strong to assist students during this difficult time.

Last week, students focused on courage and had conversations about what it means and discussed examples of what it looks like. Quotes from famous people are used to promote reflection and discussion. Nelson Mandela wrote, ”I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

Living in our new reality brought about by the pandemic has forced all of us to face life with courage. We can all be role models for our children by dealing with the challenges that this has brought about by exercising patience, understanding, and having positive thoughts. We are in this together. We can do this!

Welcome back for the new school year for all of our returning students and to those who are new to Marshall Lane--we are so happy that you will be joining us! We are all excited about beginning a new year!

Our teachers are back and have been participating in professional development, collaborating with their colleagues, and creating learning plans for your students. Thanks to everyone who came to our drive by pick ups to obtain Chromebooks for your student(s). If you have not yet done so, your student will need their QR code to log on to their Zoom meetings and learning plans starting on the first day of school--AUGUST 24th.  Contact your teacher to come by to obtain your student’s QR code, if you did not already receive it.

Attendance is mandatory and roll will be taken each day. If your child is ill or will not be joining us for any reason, please call the attendance line in our office to report your child’s absence at (408) 341-7076 or email our attendance clerk, Tricia Urrutia at turrutia [at] campbellusd.org.

The school day will begin at 8:30 and will run until 2:15. There will be a blend of synchronous (live) and asynchronous (independent) work on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday, and Fridays. On Wednesdays, students will have a morning meeting with their teacher and then complete unfinished work, do enrichment activities, and work on assigned projects. Small group instruction, English Language Development classes, reading intervention, and the resource specialist program instruction will also take place on Wednesdays. Teachers may also conduct office hours on Wednesdays so students or parents can ask questions. We know that over time, the schedules will be adjusted based on the needs of the students in the class.

We are looking forward to a successful year for all of our students. Remaining flexible and nimble are essential as we keep everyone safe and respond to the current conditions. Take care and be well!

As we begin a new school year, it is clear that communication is more important now than ever. SInce we are unable to meet in person, Zoom meetings and online connections have become increasingly important.
You have received an invitation from our Marshall Lane Parent/Teacher Association (PTA) to join an app called Konstella. This allows the PTA and the teachers to communicate with you via your email address or addresses. Our teachers often use this method to inform families of important information.
Please sign up for Konstella so you won't miss out on the things you need to know!
