A sincere thanks to everyone who attended our 45th annual Pumpkin Walk on Saturday.  It was a wonderful event and luckily, the weather was perfect!  A special thank you to each and every one of you that helped out.  These events would not be possible without a huge effort on the part of the community.  We appreciate ALL you do to support our school and your students!

Stay tuned for information about the amount of money we raised to support programs for the children of Marshall Lane.

Today, I met with our School Resource Officer from the Sheriff’s Office regarding driving around the school and parking.  Officers have been present in the neighborhoods surrounding our school and have been issuing tickets for speeding, failure to stop at the stop signs, and not yielding to ongoing traffic at the corner of Quito and Marshall Lanes.  They will continue to do so.

In addition, there have been some issues with parking.  Please do not park your car in the lower lot adjacent to the fence.  There are “No Parking” signs on the fence to indicate that having vehicles parked there holds up traffic and makes it difficult for cars to get around the corner to pick up their students.  Also, parking along the curb in the upper lot is not allowed.  This blocks traffic and holds up the pick up process.
Thank you for your help in getting our students to and from school in a safe and orderly manner.

In order to provide our teachers with time to meet with all of the families of the students in their classes, children will be dismissed at 12:35 every day this week—October 31st to November 4th.  All students will still be eating lunch at school.

If your students attend Campbell Care, they will go there when school is out. If they do not, you need to arrange to pick them up at 12:35 so the teachers can begin to meet with parents.  Please be on time so they can maximize this opportunity to communicate with all of you.  Thank you!

Safety is our most important consideration at Marshall Lane.  Ensuring that our students are safe is a priority for all of us, not only on the school grounds but also when they arrive at school in the morning and leave every afternoon,

We have noticed that some students who should still be in a car seat or a booster seat are no longer using one even though they are not yet 8 years old.  In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Board recommends that all children under 12 years old ride in the back seat of the car.

Here is the text of the law:

California’s Occupant Protection Law
As of 2012, California law requires that children be properly secured in the back seat in a proper child restraint system until they are at least eight years old.* Additionally, all children under age 16 must be properly secured in either a proper child restraint system or seat belt.  On a first offense, a child passenger violation will cost a minimum of $475 with penalty assessments.  A second or subsequent offense carries a minimum cost of $1,055.  If the parent is not in the car, the driver gets the ticket.

Estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that 33 children age four and under would have been saved in 2008 in California had they been properly restrained in a child safety seat.

*NHTSA recommends all children 12 and under ride in the back seat.

Our goal in reminding you of these important safety considerations is to assist you in keeping your precious child/ren safe.  We are working with the Sheriff’s Office and our School Resource Officer to monitor this situation. Thank you for reading this information and for helping us to protect your child’s safety in your vehicle.  They are worth it!

During two small windows of time every school day, almost 600 students arrive at Marshall Lane to join their classmates.  Although we are fortunate to have two parking lots and organized drop off and pick up procedures, the sheer volume of traffic creates a challenge at these times.  We are asking for your help and cooperation to make this process as smooth as possible for everyone.

Please follow these simple procedures when parking, picking up or dropping off your child/ren.

  • Be courteous and patient in our parking lot and the surrounding areas. All of the people in line also have children at our school and they want them to be safe.
  • Park only in marked parking spaces.  Leaving your car in red zones, handicapped spaces or adjacent to fences that are clearly marked “No Parking” blocks traffic and causes additional problems.
  • Be kind to our neighbors by not blocking their driveways or parking on their property.
  • Stopping in the traffic lane on Sobey Drive to drop off or pick up your child/ren is unsafe and blocks traffic.  Either use the drop off zones in the parking lots or park your car and walk your child into school.

The Sheriff’s Department Traffic Control Division has been advised of issues that have been reported and have agreed to monitor and write citations to those who are not following the traffic laws.

We appreciate the cooperation and patience of everyone as we attempt to make the process as smooth as possible.  Thank you!
