Dear Parents of Marshall Lane Elementary School,

I’m honored and excited to begin the 2022-23 school year as the new principal of Marshall Lane Elementary. If, like me, you are new to the Marshall Lane community, welcome aboard! If you are a returning family, we’re glad to have you back! On behalf of the staff and teachers here, we look forward to welcoming you when school resumes on August 18.

By way of introduction, here’s a little about my background. I have been an educator for about twenty years, first as a 7th and 8th grade social studies, US History, and drama teacher at Willow Glen Middle School in San Jose. I served as the assistant principal of discipline at WGMS for three years, and then as the assistant principal of instruction for 6 years. Here are my impressions as I assume the principal position from Mrs. Priscilla Spencer:

This is a great school!

During my transition meetings with Mrs. Spencer and in my time with the staff, their dedication to the academic and social-emotional well-being of all students stands front and center. As an educator very familiar with the middle school experience, I know how vital it is that students are well-prepared for what comes next.

As teachers return to prepare for the new school year, our focus will be to continue the work to provide rigorous academic instruction while meeting the social-emotional needs of students in our care. Your participation in the life of the school will continue to play a big part in the success of our learning community. My door is open and I welcome the opportunity to hear from you if you have questions or concerns.

With thanks to Mrs. Spencer for her excellent stewardship and to the Marshall Lane staff and teachers for their warm welcome and generosity as I step in as principal, I look forward to carrying on the proud tradition of educational excellence at Marshall Lane.

Go Mustangs!

The California Assessment of Student Proficiency and Progress (CAASPP), otherwise known as the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) tests have begun for all of our 3rd to 5th grade students. Please make sure that your child is at school everyday, unless they are ill, and ready to do their best on the tests. Having a good night’s sleep and eating a healthy breakfast is also very important.

Please do not bring your child to school late, pick them up early, or schedule any routine appointments during this time since it is disruptive to the entire class to have students coming and going during testing. We appreciate your help with making this a successful experience for all of our children. Thank you!!

There is an unbelievable amount of clothing that students have left behind that has not yet been claimed. If your child has misplaced a sweater, jacket, lunch box or water bottle, please check the cart adjacent to the staff lounge before school to claim their lost items. Thank you!

Currently, the school day for students in 2nd & 3rd grade begins at 8:10. Gates onto the campus off of the upper parking lot are closed and locked at 8:00 since 4th & 5th graders who are dropped off there need to be in class at this time. If the gate is not locked, students in these grade levels who arrive after 8:00 walk onto the campus and arrive in class late without a tardy pass. In some cases, they are marked absent by their teachers and parents receive an automated call informing them that their student is not in class.

If 2nd & 3rd grade students are dropped off in the upper lot after 8:00 when the gates are closed, they can walk down the hill to the lower lot and enter the campus through the gate adjacent to the office. Alternatively, 2nd & 3rd grades may be dropped off in the lower lot.

We appreciate your help with ensuring that all students will be on time for their classes.

Over the next few weeks, students in the upper grades will begin taking the California Assessments of Student Progress and Proficiency (CAASPP). Here are some important guidelines to help your child be successful:

  • Schedule any routine doctor and dental appointments after school or in June when school is over.

  • Make travel plans for the summer, not when school is in session

  • Make sure your child has a good night’s sleep.

  • Provide a healthy breakfast and send a snack with them to school.

  • Encourage your child to “do their best” but do not put any undue pressure on them

None of our students have ever taken this assessment before due to it being canceled because of the pandemic. Teachers are working with students to ensure that they are as prepared as possible and to put the least amount of stress about the tests on them.
